Having abandoned the English national team, is Greenwood donning the Jamaican jersey?
If he agrees, forward Mason Greenwood could potentially play for the Jamaican national team in the near future.
Mason Greenwood was first called up to the England national team on August 25, 2020. On September 5, the forward, currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, made his debut for the Three Lions in their win against Iceland in the Nations League.
Two days after the victory against Iceland, Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden were expelled from the team due to disciplinary breaches. Specifically, coach Southgate expelled the duo for bringing model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir and her cousin, Lara Clausen, into the England team hotel.
Following the scandal involving bringing guests into the hotel, Phil Foden was reinstated to the national team in November 2020. However, Mason Greenwood, the 22-year-old forward, has been overlooked by coach Gareth Southgate since then. Thus, the win against Iceland remains Greenwood's only appearance for the Three Lions to date.
After nearly 4 years without international appearances, Greenwood is now presented with the opportunity to represent the national team. Specifically, Jamaica's national team head coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, has extended an invitation to the Manchester United forward to play for the CONCACAF side.
In an interview with The Athletic yesterday, Heimir Hallgrimsson expressed his desire to welcome Greenwood. When asked about Greenwood's potential decision to forsake England and play for Jamaica, the 56-year-old coach said: "I really want him in the squad. Like all coaches, I want to have the best players. However, it depends on him."
As known, Greenwood is of Jamaican descent (with his father being English and his mother of Jamaican descent). Since Greenwood has only played one game for the England national team, according to FIFA regulations, Manchester United's player is eligible to switch to represent Jamaica.
For these reasons, the striker currently shining at Getafe is qualified to play for the Jamaica national team. The final decision entirely depends on Greenwood.
